HAIR PROBLEMS: DANDRUFF

Posted by admin

Dandruff, the most common cause of itchiness of the scalp and excessive shedding of scales (scurf), affects up to 70 percent of Americans from time to time, the U. S. Pharmacist (9:22) reports. Scalp itching and scaliness also occurs with psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, diseases that are much less common than dandruff and that, fortunately, are not made worse by the usual treatments for dandruff.

Although it cannot be permanently “cured” by shampoos and always comes back again from time to time, dandruff can be kept under control with these preparations. There are many of them, fortunately, and one can nearly always be found that suits the individual and works reasonably well. If you are having difficulty in controlling dandruff, tell your pharmacist which shampoos you have tried, and ask him to recommend another that might work better for you.

One point that the U. S. Pharmacist makes very strongly and which one cannot afford to ignore is that it is essential to follow the written directions. Many people, for instance, do not leave the shampoo on the scalp long enough to do any good before rinsing it off, or, conversely, they fail to rinse the scalp well enough to remove all traces of the medication. This is important because many anti-dandruff chemicals are so irritating when allowed to remain on the skin for too long that they themselves can cause a dandruff-like condition.
